Basic information about Avodart (Dutasteride)

Avodart (Dutasteride) is adviced for treating symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Avodart (Dutasteride) works by lowering levels of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a major cause of prostate growth. It is a 5 alpha-reductase enzyme inhibitor.

Before taking Avodart (Dutasteride), tell your doctor if you are using any of the following medicines:

• imatinib (Gleevec);
• an antidepressant such as nefazodone;
• an antibiotic such as clarithromycin (Biaxin), clotrimazole (Mycelex Troche), dalfopristin/quinupristin (Synercid), erythromycin (E.E.S., EryPed, Ery-Tab, Erythrocin), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), telithromycin (Ketek), or voriconazole (Vfend);
• conivaptan (Vaprisol);
• HIV/AIDS medicine such as amprenavir (Agenerase), atazanavir (Reyataz), delavirdine (Rescriptor), fosamprenavir (Lexiva), indinavir (Crixivan), nelfinavir(Viracept), saquinavir (Invirase, Fortovase), or ritonavir (Norvir).
• heart or blood pressure medication such as diltiazem (Cardizem, Dilacor, Tiazac), nicardipine (Cardene), quinidine (Quinaglute, Quinidex, Quin-Release), or verapamil (Calan, Covera, Isoptin, Verelan); or
• isoniazid (for treating tuberculosis);
• diclofenac (Arthrotec, Cataflam, Voltaren, Flector Patch, Solareze);

Warnings and Precautions about Avodart (Dutasteride)

If you have a history of serious diseases, you may prefer to attend your nurse before accepting Avodart (Dutasteride).

Every patient should necessarily understand that nearly every pill may lead to side effects if it is taken by wrong schedule, or you have ever had allergic reaction to it.

• severe allergic reactions (hives, tightness in the chest, rash, swelling of the mouth face lips or tongue, difficulty breathing.) .

Do not use Avodart if:

• you are pregnant or a female of childbearing age.
• you are allergic to any ingredient in Avodart or other 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors (e.g., finasteride) ;

Important :

• Lab tests may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Avodart can cause harm to the fetus. Do not use Avodart if you are pregnant. If you suspect that you could be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. It is unknown if Avodart is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Avodart.
• Avodart is not recommended for use in children; safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
• Avodart is absorbed through the skin. Women who are or may potentially be pregnant must not handle crushed or broken tablets because it may cause harm to the fetus. If contact is made with leaking capsules, the contact area should be washed immediately with soap and water and a doctor should be consulted.
• Avodart may decrease your volume of ejaculate. This does not appear to interfere with normal sexual function.
• Avodart can affect a blood test called prostate-specific antigen (PSA) for the screening of prostate cancer. If you have a PSA test done, you should tell your doctor that you are taking Avodart.
• Avodart stays in the blood stream for 4 to 6 months after you stop taking it. Do not donate blood for at least 6 months after your last dose of Avodart to prevent exposure through a blood transfusion to a pregnant woman.
